Learning
is built on repetition, habit formation and some other mechanical drills (e.g.
dialogue memorisation) .
Habit
formation theory is derived from Behaviorism principles.
Inductive
teaching is the way of teaching grammar, so explicit grammar rules are not
seen.
Other Features of ALM
Everyday
language and oral communication are important parts of ALM.
Perfect
pronunciation is very essential because classes with ALM are largely based on
oral communication activities.
One
of the most important goals is to form learning habits of target language.
The
other goals are to make students speak, write and think in target language
without stopping and to form new habits for learning target language.
Speaking
in native language is avoided for students, because this can break the habit
formation process.
In
grammar teaching, students are exposed to mechanical drills which provide to
acquire grammar rules.
Teacher
is like an orchestra leader and s/he controls the language behaviour of
students.
Teacher
is a good model for students in terms of pronunciation.
Students
are imitators of the teacher or a native speaker by means of audio/video
recordings.
Teacher-student
and student-teacher interaction take place in class.
Errors
are corrected immediately by the teacher, otherwise they can break the habit
formation process.
In
evaluation process, discrete-point tests are used. Testing one aspect of
language is essential in ALM.
Four
skills are emphasised, there is a natural order of skills: 1. Listening, 2.
Speaking, 3. Reading, 4. Writing.
Diaoluge
memorisation, minimal pairs, dialogue completion, repetition drill,
question-answer memorisation, chain drill, grammar and pronunciation games are
used as activities and techniques.
