GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD

“There is no the best or a better method in language teaching. Every method has advantages and disadvantages in itself.”

mechanical language learning

The  most known ideas and features:

The main theory is learning language with mechanical oriented patterns.

Translation is one of the best ways of learning the structure of the target language.

To have the knowledge of structure of native language is equivalent to know target language structure.

Writing and reading skills are superior to speaking and listening skills. There is no oral communicative activities.

Deductive learning is a necessity. Firstly teacher introduces a grammatical rule to students, then expects them to understand the subject by supporting the learning with exercises.

The other features:

Teacher’s role is the authoritian and students are passive in the class. If teacher gives them a speech space, they can do it.

teacher is the authority

Otherwise they are totally quiet and not a participant for the class.

They are supposed to write down the notes and memorize vocabulary and rules.

“Teacher-student” interaction is common. Sometimes “student-student” interaction is seen.

Memorisation is a commonly used technique. Vocabulary is given by the teacher and memorized with its meaning in students’ native language.

Comparing two languages’ (native and target language) structural differences and similarities are common in this method.

Translation, fill-in-the-blank, and reading comprehension questions, vocabulary quizes, setting new sentences and writing texts are common techniques to evaluate students and process the class.

Errors are corrected immediately and not tolerated. Accuracy takes place in terms of grammatical accuracy and there is no importance of fluency, because there is no productivity.

Objectives are to improve translation capacity and learning the language by doing more exercises habit.
